Cafeteras in the sky

Warning – we’re about to get very Miami right now. Our head of PR, Mabel De Beunza, has an uncanny knack for turning her Miami sense of humor into nationwide press for our clients. We’ll start with her vision of having the Miami-Dade County Mayor pardon two pigs on Nochebuena at our client’s restaurant, Latin Café.

Roasted pig or ‘lechón’ is the centerpiece meal of South Florida’s Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) celebration. In Miami, where lechón is as omnipresent as café con leche, the coming of Nochebuena means impending doom for many unfortunate pigs. Mabel, not necessarily a pig sympathizer but a brilliant PR pro, joked – “wouldn’t it be funny to save some of them like what they do with the turkeys on Thanksgiving?” And from that moment, the ‘Chief of Getting it Done’ began her mission to save the pigs and started a new Miami-Dade County tradition – The Lechón Pardoning Ceremony at Latin Café.

Mabel’s brilliance didn’t stop at the lechón, though – “have you guys seen those umbrellas in the sky at Coconut Grove? Can you imagine cafeteras in the sky instead?” Oh yes Mabel, we can imagine it – but even better, let’s build it.

Mabel, on behalf of the city of Miami, please continue with your jokes and thank you for being you.

So far – Layla, Luna, Peppa, and Petra, the pot-bellied pigs have Mabel to thank for missing their date with ‘la caja china.’ And Latin Café has appeared on USA Today, the Miami Herald, the Associated Press, and Channel 7 News as a result of this stunt gone viral.

The Cafetera Sky at Latin Café has now become the restaurant’s signature entrance and a “Miami Masterpiece” as written by Miami.com. The piece has received press from Eater Miami, El Nuevo Herald, worldredye.com, and MSN.
